CHARACTER NAME: [ Remus J. Lupin. ]
SERIES: [ Harry Potter. ]
CANON POINT: [ Sixth Year at Hogwarts, 1977. ]
LOSS: [ Loss of the mental barrier that keeps the human separate from the wolf. (Don’t worry! Remus still has control, but he might be a little more on edge and more ... wolf-like in general. Don’t be worried if he suddenly starts craving raw and bloody meat!) ]
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: [First and foremost, the most important information you need to know is that Remus John Lupin is a Werewolf. Perhaps Remus himself would be unlikely to be inclined to release this sort of information to you, but it is the key to understanding everything in the way of his thinking and personality. He has spent the majority of his young life facing many hardships that would be unimaginable to many a witch or wizard in this day and age and has somehow managed to scrape by without too much damage to his mental state. Nevertheless, if you want to understand the kind of person Remus is, it is only proper to learn about his past.
Remus John Lupin, named after his father, was bitten at the mere age of three. His father had offended a known and very dangerous werewolf, Fenrir Greyback, who had the nasty habit of preying on small children. Remus soon became Greyback’s target, and just barely surviving the mauling itself, was left scarred and cursed. As werewolves were forced to change during the full moon and cannot control themselves, Remus’ parents locked him in the basement every month and strived to protect him from the outside world as much as they could. The Wizarding Community has been largely prejudiced against werewolves for hundreds of years, making life that much harder and more dangerous than it already is for many werewolves. As such, Remus learned to fear at an early age and has since been very cautious about revealing his secret.
The transformation of a werewolf is considered one of the most painful experiences anyone can go through. As he was usually separated from the humans that the Wolf craved to bite, Remus tore at himself in frustration, leaving horrendous injuries to his own body after each full moon. Remus also becomes violently ill within the week before the full moon, which saps nearly all of his energy and leaves him even more vulnerable. Every full moon means a very real possibility of death.
Like every young wizard, Remus received the customary Hogwarts letter the day he turned eleven. Though his parents had initially worried over how their son could possibly attend school surrounded by hundreds of other students, Dumbledore easily resolved the issue and insisted that it would be safe for Remus to attend. A plan was concocted so that on every night of the full moon, Remus would be guided down to the Whomping Willow on the grounds, where a tunnel lead to the Shrieking Shack built only for his use, so he could transform safely and without harming anyone else. No one else but the staff and Headmaster Dumbledore would know of this, specifically so that Remus could live a relatively normal life at school.
His plan for a mostly solitary lifestyle at school, however, was quickly dashed. Three boys, James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, grew rather curious of the frail, meek little Gryffindor who usually sat alone at the back of the classroom. Troublemakers, all three of them -- especially the dynamic duo that was Potter and Black – made many attempts to befriend him, all with varying degrees of success. Remus soon found himself included in many of their schemes and adventures, usually not by his own choosing, though he could not deny that he seemed to gravitate toward them more often than not. There was no formal declaration of friendship for him, just the realization that he indeed had friends, and that they had chosen to include him and treat him as one of them. He might have been shy and very good at avoiding certain questions, but they had seen something of worth in him and that meant the world to Remus.
Of the Maruaders, Remus is seemingly the only non-troublemaker. While just as accepted and included into the quartet as the others, he’s often seen to the side, nose stuck in a book or just quietly observing his friends’ antics. Many other students like him, for he’s often polite and soft spoken, very much unlike his louder friends. Yet, what many would not believe is that Remus is often the mastermind of many of their greatest pranks. James and Sirius are talented wizards for their age, but Remus can be counted as the second best of his entire class – second only to Lily Evans. He researches their spells and works behind the scenes to make sure the entire plan goes off without a hitch, making him an invaluable member of the team. He is, however, somewhat of a stickler for following the rules, which is why he remains behind the scenes and not within the eye of any teacher who may be watching.
On the question of his “furry little problem”, even Remus, a master at evasion since the age of three, could not keep it a secret from his friends for very long. Remus had misjudged their cleverness, and halfway through their second year, they figured it out and cornered him. Now, you might do well to note that Remus Lupin hates being backed into a corner. He will do all in his power to get himself out of the situation, whether it be simply changing the subject or ignoring it altogether. In the case of his friends, however, he was utterly terrified that they might abandon him, sell him out to the Ministry and have him expelled. This turned out to be another severe misjudgement on his part. They accepted him, and though they might have had a few initial qualms, refused to abandon him. Remus was a Marauder through and through, and being a werewolf did not change that. (Though, of course, they were very unimpressed that he had lied in the first place.)
His friends even did something that Remus would forever be grateful for. During fifth year, they became illegal Animagi, gaining the ability to change into animals in order to be with him during the full moon. Within their company, the Wolf no longer tore at himself in frustration for being unable to hunt. Though the transformation itself was painful, he no longer worried about the pain he would have to go through for days afterwards, laying in a hospital bed from wounds that were notoriously difficult to heal. The Wolf became tame and Remus was able to keep some of his mind. They were, and are, his pack, his family and the only people in this world he could ever truly trust and love.
The Marauders, having become quite well-known by their fifth year, eventually created nicknames for themselves. Remus became affectionately known as “Moony”, so named for obvious reasons. The term is now being used more often by his friends than his actual name in his sixth year, where he has also become a Prefect. Though he takes his position seriously, Remus falls rather short when it comes to his friends. He does dole out disciplinary punishments once in a while, depending on the seriousness of the offense, but he generally turns a blind eye, much to the chagrin of fellow prefect, Lily Evans. He can and will get annoyed easily, however, though much of his temper is subdued. As each monthly transformation takes a huge toll on his body and the weeks nearing the full moon cause him to become ill, he prefers not to tax his energy too much by losing his temper.
As Remus is generally a calm person, he uses his intellect to think logically in order to get out of tough situations. If he ever does lose his temper, he hardly raises his voice (unless Sirius was the cause of it), and instead he’ll retreat to the library or simply give you the dreaded silent treatment. His anger usually does not last long, however, as he is extremely forgiving, almost to a fault. This is perhaps an after-effect of the prejudices he has faced due to his lycanthropy. Remus wants to be liked, craves it, and so does not like to dwell on anything that may cost him his friendships. Those he does not get along with well usually do not experience Remus’ temper, as he tries his best to be civil around his enemies. (He is the only member of the Marauders who does not join in with the bullying of one Severus Snape. Though neither does he make an attempt to stop his friends from tormenting Snape, either.)
Aside from his book-smarts, Remus is also quite perceptive. He can and often will guess your thoughts accurately, without having to be told and notices the little, insignificant things no one else would be able to catch right away. Overall, he attempts to see the good in others and give them the benefit of the doubt, despite his continued wariness of strangers and slight bitterness towards those who are openly prejudiced. However, though he might be prone to seeing the good in others, his own self-esteem is perhaps his most closely guarded secret aside from his Lycanthropy. Despite his adherence to controlling the wolf and all that his friends have done for him, he still sees himself as less than human, a dark creature. Just like his Lycanthropy, he does all he can to steer conversation away from certain insecurities and is highly unlikely to approach anybody, not even his friends, about something that might be bothering him. This appears to continue later on in life, when he slips and calls himself a “creature” in front of Harry and his friends.
As for quirks, Remus has a fair few of them. He is prone to sitting under tables, especially in the library, though he will refrain from doing so in a crowded area. He can usually be seen with either quill or his wand tucked behind his ear and has a habit of muttering to himself on a frequent basis. He also has a somewhat strange fondness for chocolate – especially the extra-dark variety – and has a very distinct sigh that he uses whenever his friends are creating mayhem that he disapproves of. ]
ABILITIES: [ One of the most obvious ability Remus has in his possession, despite his inability to control it, is his Lycanthropy. Every night of the full moon, Remus will be forced to turn into a bloodthirsty, semi-bipedal wolf. In this form, Remus loses his mind to the wolf and will become extremely dangerous to any human being to cross his path. One bite sustained from a fully transformed werewolf will pass on the affliction to the victim (provided the victim is still in one piece), though a bite from a werewolf in his/her human form will only give the victim a few canine habits, such as preferring your meat a little on the rare side. Remus in his human form is also much stronger than he looks and his sense of smell and hearing is far greater than that of the average human.
Remus Lupin is also a wizard, possessing the ability to use magic. A highly talented wizard, he is particularly adept at charms and defensive spells. He also knows a number of minor little hexes and jinxes, and though he is unlikely to abuse this knowledge on unsuspecting victims, you would do well to take caution anyway. Like Sirius and James, he is of legal age to apparate, though he will not be abusing it as much as his fellow marauders might. (Splinching is, of course, still a risk!) ]
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: [ There is something to be said about Remus’ near-godlike level of patience whilst in the company of the marauders. For someone so sickly and tired the majority of the time, being able to put up with the chaos that is James Potter and Sirius Black seemed to be a talent reserved only for him and him alone. Nonetheless, here he was, perched on his favourite chair in the Gryffindor common room and trying very, very hard to ignore the pounding headache threatening to distract him from his work. The Marauders Map lay across his lap, a number of books on cartography, charms and spells scattered about him and looking almost as though Remus had brought the entire library up with him.
Sighing that familiar exasperated sigh, Remus looked up from his work and at the source of his headache. James, Sirius and Peter were all sitting nearby, prattling on quite loudly about some wild scheme they had concocted and otherwise making total prats of themselves as per usual.
He did not bother trying to tell them to be quiet, however. Remus had learned years ago that doing so would only cause their attention to switch onto him, which would inevitably mean that he could say goodbye to accomplishing any work whatsoever. The safest route was to simply steer the conversation onto a topic that was less likely to garner more excitement.
“While we’re on the topic of troublemaking, I must ask you, Padfoot, exactly why I found Snape hanging from a wall sconce on my way up here this afternoon?” He raised an eyebrow as Sirius simply gave him a nonplussed expression and a shrug. Sirius made no attempts to hide his guilt – not that he had any in the first place -- and Remus simply rolled his eyes. Typical.
“Why do you think it was me?” Sirius inquired, feigning innocence, despite the smug little grin trying to creep onto his face.
Remus only smiled as he turned back to his work, “Because there was ‘Padfoot’ written all over the crime scene. You should really try to be less obvious.”
Remus glanced up briefly and found himself confronted with a pair of big, round gray eyes, staring straight into his soul. He sighed for what had to be the umpteenth time that day and tried his hardest to feign complete and utter disappointment, despite knowing that Sirius was immune to such things.
“You’re not going to report me, are you Moony?” The corners of Sirius’ mouth turned downward, eyebrows furrowing and bottom lip quivering just a touch. The dreaded puppy-face that evidently, Remus was immune to – or so he’d like to think anyway.
He didn’t answer at first, simply turning his head away and pretending to consider his options. When he looked at Sirius again, the other boy had moved to sit at his feet, still giving him that same pout, though now there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. This was a game, a familiar one, and they both knew that Remus was not even going to consider ratting Sirius out.
“Hmh ... “
“Pleaaaaaase, Moony?” Sirius shuffled closer, putting his chin on Remus’ knee and tilting his head, much like a dog, “Moooony ~”
Eventually, after a few more moments spent humming and hawing and Sirius promising all sorts of extravagant things to get himself out of trouble, Remus “gave-in”. It was to be expected in the end. Besides, if he didn’t, he’d have to listen to Sirius whining at him all through the night and into next morning’s Transfiguration class. He didn’t need an even bigger headache.
“Oh fine, you big prat. Get off me.” He kicked him lightly and rolled his eyes, grinning lightly as Sirius gave a loud whoop and reached up to ruffle his hair.
“Though, I am still expecting you to buy me that load of chocolate you promised me.” ]
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: [ (Taken from a Sample given to another community!) [ The face of a young man comes into focus through the video feed, tired, yet curious amber eyes peering at the odd piece of jewelry attached to his wrist. At first glance, he seems like any normal teenager, until you notice the scar tracing across his nose and the various other scratches that mar his otherwise handsome features.
Upon seeing his own face peering back at him, his brow furrows and he tilts his head to the side. ]
Is this one of those ... Muggle contraptions they call a “video camera”?
No ... no, it couldn’t be. This is far too complex even for Wizarding standards. Wonder who could’ve conjured it...
[ He lifts his wand to tap at the book carefully, muttering under his breath as he inspects it. ]
Oh -- ! [ He makes a noise as the feed suddenly turns to fuzz, before it clears once again. He leans back a bit, pocketing his wand, brows furrowed, but a curious gleam still in his eye. ]
I don’t suppose anyone can hear me through this, can they? If you can, well um ... Hello, I suppose...
I am Remus J. Lupin, Sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance. According to what I’ve been told, this place I’ve landed in is called Asgard and I am in Odin house. Though, I’m not quite sure as to what any of this information quite entails, aside from that malarkey about some War and the fact that I cannot use magic here other than the powers that were given to me.
If ... [ He falters for a moment, biting his lip and looking nervously away from the screen. ]
If this is all true, I-I don’t suppose someone could lend me some information on ... on moon cycles here ... ? It would be much appreciated, thanks.
[ He nods a moment, before seeming to perk up again. ]
Oh, and one more thing.
If my friends are here, and if anyone has seen them – though, I really don’t think it’s possible not to have at least heard them, they’re so loud – please do tell me. Their names are Sirius Black, James Potter and Peter Pettigrew and they’re usually mucking about and creating general havoc and chaos and what have you. Not hard to spot.
Thank you.]
INTENT: [ Remus is, by far, my favourite of the marauders and I simply find him an enjoyable character to roleplay. As for what I want to do with him in Paradisa, I want to test the boundaries of his loss, as well as help him become more comfortable in his own skin by sticking him in a brand new and unfamiliar place. Not to mention we now have a James and Sirius ~ ! ]
